If you are launching at a strange ramp, check below water level - sometimes ramps end very abruptly! One of the first things to do upon arrival at a launching ramp is to remove the taillights. With a loaded boat on the trailer, towball weight should be around 100kg. Cheek and adjust the brakes and tyre pressure regularly. Cheek the wheel bearings and replace the grease about twice a season (more often if you keep immersing the axle in the water). Align this to the tiller - point up a little on the way up and bear off a little on the way down. Keep the telltales in trim by easing the sheet on the way up and tightening on the way down. If there are waves, keep an eye on the luff as you go up and down. If the traveler is too high, the leech telltales will flutter to leeward, so ease just enough to straighten them out. Adjust the traveler so they’re flying straight back, and then trim the sheet to the luff telltales. Here it’s helpful to have telltales on the leech. If you’re off the wind, ease the traveler until the sail is parallel to the apparent wind. If the wind is too strong, so you’re overpowered, you can let the traveler down to spill some wind off the sail until you’re under control. If you’re sailing upwind, the traveler brings the boom to the midline, and then you trim the sheet to the telltales on the luff.
